Paniyiri Pops Up in Reddacliff Place
27/04/2012
Brisbane Marketing have partnered with the Greek Orthodox Community of St George Brisbane to bring the Paniyiri Pop Up Event to The City on Friday May 11.
It’s the first time in the 36 year history of the West End event that a preview event is being held. It promises to bring a taste of the Mediterranean to the CBD with smell of the Greek BBQ, taste of honey puffs, and sounds of bouzoukis to hit The City.
Paniyiri Pop Up will feature Paniyiri’s very own Herc & Xena Greek characters; Greek food tastings – the perfect time to indulge in a few honey puffs, souvlakia and haloumi before the main event the following weekend – lots of live music and colour and children’s activities, and Brisbane’s iconic Hellenic Dancers and the Cypriot Community of QLD dancers. There’ll also be warm-up Honey Puff Eating competitions. Most importantly, Zorba Dance lessons and demonstrations will take place, in preparation for the Guinness World Record attempt on May 19.
Paniyiri is Queensland’s signature celebration of all things Greek. Paniyiri is a community initiative of the 25,000-strong Greek community of South East Queensland. Funds raised are channeled back into the community via the Greek Orthodox Community of St George, Brisbane’s oldest Greek community established in the 1920s. This year’s main event will be held on Saturday May 19 and Sunday May 20 at Musgrave Park at South Brisbane.
